Pool info for 2008 Season

Dear Wing Point Members,                                                                         4/8/2008

As many of you know, I am currently your food and beverage manager here at Wing Point.  This summer, I will be taking on the additional responsibility of managing the pool.  This is an area that the club, as well as many members, felt a need for improvement.  I am going to address many of the issues and complaints that members have expressed over the last few years.  Please take the time to read each section so you can be up to date on what will be expected this year at the pool.  I am hoping that with communication, many of these issues will be taken care of, and we can all enjoy a great experience at the pool this summer.

Food Service

One of the areas that many members voiced concerns about was the food and beverage service at the pool.  We have tried numerous ways to provide these services, including a snack shack, outdoor barbecue, and food runners, over the past 3 years alone.  So far, there have been problems with each method.  The snack shack was an eye sore as well as unequipped with the proper vents and kitchen equipment necessary to provide all the menu options.  The outdoor barbecue idea limited the menu choices and we did not have the refrigeration or space to store food at the proper temperatures.  The food runner method seems to work the best because it offers the widest menu selection and is cooked by our trained kitchen staff upstairs.  The problem with the food runner method is that things can be very slow.  The kitchen is cooking for the full restaurant, bar, decks, window on the green, 9th tee box, etc…  There are times when the kitchen gets very overwhelmed with orders and things start to slow down all over.  There is no way of getting around this.  Members may assume that we don’t have enough staff or that the staff is just not working very hard or fast, but in all reality, it comes down to not having enough space.  We cannot staff any additional kitchen crew because there would be no place to put them.  The “line” in the kitchen is only about 8 feet long and we only have one grill, one flat grill, and 2 fryers.  By explaining all of this, I am hoping that it will help members to realize why things can sometimes take a long time.  If it is a hot summer day and you see a full parking lot you can assume that all areas of Wing Point are busy.  My suggestion is that members ordering at the pool should try and place there orders at least 30 minutes prior to the time they would like to eat if it is a busy day.

Another concern that members mentioned was that once they did receive their orders, things would be incorrect.  I will be implementing a double check system in the kitchen to help insure order accuracy.  I will also be numbering the tables at the pool so that after members have ordered, the runners can deliver the food directly to the members table.

I have read each and every comment that members submitted last year regarding the pool.  There were a lot of great suggestions and things I will be adding this year such as server name tags, table numbering, and separate color coded recycle and trash cans.

There was also some talk about the cleanliness of the tables, decks, and the locker rooms.  I will be having the staff check and clean the locker rooms at scheduled times throughout the day.  They will also have towels and sanitizer at the pool for the staff to use to clean tables after each use.  The staff will be trained to look for and pick up any trash on the deck as well.  If you happen to notice an area that needs cleaned, please don’t hesitate to ask the staff to take care of it.

Lifeguards/Safety

I also wanted to talk about the lifeguard and safety issues at the pool.  I understand the importance of safety at the pool and felt that if I was going to be a proper pool manager, I would need to be lifeguard certified.  The only class that was available was a high school life guarding class so I have subjected myself to a little humiliation in order to be the best manager possible.  I am now a 30 + year old high school student!  But in all seriousness, I felt it was a necessary thing to do and think I will be a better manager because of it.  I am also taking classes with the county to learn about managing a pool and all that it entails.  Chris Timma will continue to help with the maintenance of the pool.

Hours/Scheduling

Another area of concern that I want to talk about is the balancing of lap swimming, swim team, lessons, and general open swim.  We have a variety of members who use the pool for many different reasons.  Although I realize that we can not please every individual, I want to try and find the best balance for all members.  I have attached a copy of the 2008 schedule.  We will be offering set times to all the different swimming groups.  We will be re-establishing affordable group lessons, as well as individual lessons.  These lessons will be available only to Wing Point members and only at set times.  During the times when the swim team and the lessons are taking place, we will still be reserving at least 2 lanes for lap swimming.  The swim team will be finishing up at the end of July this year which leaves the whole month of August for extra undisturbed lap swimming.

Guest Fees/Pool Passes

The last thing I want to talk about is guest fees and pool passes.  There has been some confusion in the past about how guest fees work and many members do not know about the option of buying a pool pass for visiting friends and family.  Guest fees are $6.00 per guest per visit.  There is a Wing Point rule that you cannot bring the same guest, if they are a Kitsap County resident, more than three times per summer.  Many times members have visiting friends or relatives who stay for a week or more.  There is an option to buy a pool pass for the visiting friends or family.  The pass is $30 for the week and covers the whole family.  The pass must be purchased ahead of time and the names of each guest or family member must be provided.  Pool passes can be purchased in the main office and will be charged to your member account.  We are also trying out a new, experimental grandchildren rule this summer.  Members may bring up to two grandchildren Monday – Friday and not pay the guest fees.  Again, this is only Monday – Friday and does not include weekends.

In closing, because I will still have all of my responsibilities as the food and beverage manager, I will not be able to be at the pool at all times.  I feel it is very important to put a great crew in place down at the pool including supervisors who will report back to me on a daily basis.  Ken will be returning this summer and I will also be hiring two additional supervisors.  I really want this summer to be the best yet for Wing Point members and think that with good communication and member feed back we can accomplish that.

Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Sincerely,                       Katy Goldsberry,                 F & B Director
